The suburban village of Schaumburg in Cook County is widely known as one of the best places to live outside of Chicago. We can list a variety of things that make Schaumburg such an appealing place to live, and their award-winning Bicycle Program is definitely on that list.
The Schaumburg Bicycle Program
Schaumburg started its Bicycle Program back in the late 1970s in order to open more modes of efficient transportation within the village. The folks behind the program believed that a community with well-maintained bike routes and paths create a more livable neighborhood.
It all started with the creation of Schaumburg’s Bikeways Advisory Committee, which is basically in charge of mapping the village’s current and planned bike routes. It eventually grew into a forward-looking program, and made Schaumburg the first in Illinois to fully incorporate bicycling within the community lifestyle. In addition, Schaumburg is also the first community in Illinois to be recognized as a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists.
Thanks to this highly regarded Bicycle Program, Schaumburg now has approximately 90 miles of well-maintained bike paths, adequate bike parking, as well as locker spaces. A community-based bicycle club has also been established within Schaumburg. This club regularly links up with other similar organizations in and around Chicago. Lastly, Schaumburg is a member of the Northwest Municipal Bicycle Committee and the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning’s Bike and Pedestrian Task Force.
Schaumburg’s bike events and other programs
Aside from keeping track of Schaumburg’s extensive bike paths, the Bicycle Program also sponsors and hosts two biking events: Bike to Work Week and Fahrrad Tour von Schaumburg.
- Bike to Work Week – Held on the third Friday of May each year, Bike to Work Week is part of Schaumburg’s Bike to Work celebrations, and starts with a ceremonial bike ride to work with the village president.
- Fahrrad Tour von Schaumburg – Also known as the Bicycle Route Tour of Schaumburg, the Fahrrad Tour celebrates the village’s heritage and is open to everyone. Participants are treated to lunch and entertainment after the tour.
To entice more people to go on and take a ride around the village, Schaumburg’s Bicycle Program also rolled out an array of community programs, including the Adopt-A-Bike Path Program. After all, more people are inclined to go bicycling if the paths are clean and looked-after. Basically, the Adopt-A-Bike Program allows residents and other volunteers to maintain Schaumburg’s 90-mile bike route network. It’s one of the best ways to get to know fellow residents and give back to the community.
We highly encourage you to take a look at Schaumburg’s Bicycle Program and participate in any way you can. For more information, check out the Village of Schaumburg’s official website: http://www.villageofschaumburg.com/.
